1. Overview

CaptureKit is a browser extension available for Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. It helps users create full-page screenshots, selected-area screenshots, and short recordings of the active browser tab. It also supports local preview, copying captures to the clipboard, downloading captures, deleting captures, temporary local storage of recordings, and automatic deletion of recordings after 5 minutes.

CaptureKit is designed with a local-first privacy model. Captured content is processed locally in the user's browser or device. CaptureKit does not sell user data, track users across websites, or use captured content for profiling, advertising, creditworthiness, or unrelated purposes.

2. Information We Handle

CaptureKit handles content only when the user explicitly starts a capture action from the extension. Depending on the action, that content may include:

• Full-page screenshot images from the selected page.
• Selected-area screenshot images from the selected page.
• Short active-tab video recordings, limited to a maximum of 60 seconds.
• Local capture metadata needed for preview, download, deletion, storage, and cleanup.

Screenshots and recordings may contain text, images, form content, or other webpage content that the user chooses to capture. This captured website content remains local to the user's device and is not uploaded by CaptureKit.

3. How CaptureKit Processes Captured Content

CaptureKit processes screenshots and recordings locally in the browser environment. It does not transfer captured content to third parties and does not operate a remote server or backend for processing captured content.

Users may choose to copy or download captures. Once a user copies, downloads, attaches, uploads, shares, or otherwise uses a capture outside CaptureKit, that later use is controlled by the user and by the applications or services the user chooses to use.

4. Browser Permissions

CaptureKit uses browser permissions only to provide capture functionality and temporary recording cleanup. The permissions used by the extension are:

Firefox does not expose the same Chromium tab capture APIs. In Firefox, CaptureKit uses a local recorder page and the browser's display picker for recording.

5. Local Storage and Data Retention

CaptureKit stores media locally in the user's browser profile. Recordings are temporarily stored locally using IndexedDB and automatically expire after 5 minutes. Expired recordings are removed by automatic cleanup.

• Screenshots remain available locally until the user deletes them, downloads them, or browser storage removes them according to browser behavior.
• Temporary video recordings have a 5-minute retention period.
• Expired recordings are automatically removed.
• Users can manually delete their captures from the extension interface.
• CaptureKit does not maintain a remote copy of screenshots or recordings.

6. Third-Party Services

CaptureKit does not send captured content to third-party servers. CaptureKit does not integrate third-party analytics or advertising services for the capture functionality. CaptureKit does not transfer captured content to third parties.

7. Website Content and Protected Pages

Screenshots and recordings may include content from webpages the user chooses to capture. This can include page text, images, visible account information, or other content shown in the selected tab or selected area. CaptureKit keeps that captured website content local to the user's device and does not upload it.

Some pages cannot necessarily be captured because browsers restrict extension access to protected areas. These may include browser-internal pages, extension pages, browser store pages, privileged pages, and certain internal URLs.

8. Security

CaptureKit follows a local-processing approach to reduce unnecessary transmission of captured content. This design avoids sending screenshots or recordings to a remote processing service. However, no software or storage mechanism can be guaranteed to be completely secure. Users should be careful when capturing sensitive webpage content and when sharing copied or downloaded captures outside CaptureKit.

9. Children's Privacy

CaptureKit is not specifically directed at children and does not knowingly collect personal information from children. Because CaptureKit does not require accounts and does not maintain a remote database of captures, capture data generally remains under the user's local control.

10. Your Privacy and Data Rights

CaptureKit does not maintain user accounts or a remote database of screenshots or recordings. Most capture data remains under the user's control locally through the browser and the extension interface.

Users can delete captures from the extension interface. Users can also manage or remove extension-local browser storage using browser-provided controls, including uninstalling the extension, subject to browser behavior.

11. Changes to This Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy may be updated when CaptureKit's functionality, browser permissions, or data practices change. If the policy is updated, the “Last updated” date at the top of this page should be revised to reflect the latest version.
